EVART  — Mara VanOrder is in her third varsity sport and it would appear her work from cross country in the fall and basketball in the winter has her in good physical shape as she continues through the track season.

VanOrder had a big day in her team’s first home meet of the season against Manton and Reed City. She won the 200 meters (28.66) and discus (95-0). She scored personal records in both events.

“Things went really well,” VanOrder said. “I got some PRs and felt really good. It was a good day.”

The Evart junior is hopeful of going to the state finals in the discus.

“I’m shooting for around a 115,” VanOrder said. “I have to keep working. I have to make sure my release is improving and it goes straighter and floats out there longer. I tend to throw toward the right a lot. I need to get that going straighter.”

Her best event might be the 400, and VanOrder also wants to be a state qualifier in that.

“I want to break one minute,” she said, “and hopefully get the school record. My PR is a 1:02. I ran that at Saginaw Valley. I have a lot of work to do in order to do that. I need speed on that last 100, pushing through that pain.”

VanOrder prides herself on her good finishes.

“Cross country in the fall really trained me to finish strong,” she said. “My endurance is better than ever.”

Evart will be at Pine River Wednesday.

“We’re looking good,” VanOrder said. “Our field events are looking well. Our distance girls will be something to watch out for too.”
