EVART — Larry VanBuren is in his third sport as a senior and is excited about the prospects for the Evart track and field team this season.

VanBuren participates in throws and sprints for the Wildcats and is in his fourth varsity season. He’s been a key member in the back-to-back MITCA state track title teams. He also went to the state meet in the 4x1 relay.

His best throws have been 43 feet in the shot and 128 in the discus. This season, VanBuren wants to throw the discus 140 feet and the shot put 45 feet.

“I need to get my form down and more under control,” VanBuren said as he works on improving his throws. After a season of football and basketball, VanBuren was able to start working on track and said, prior to spring break this week, that he’s been making progress.

“We’ve been throwing,” he said, noting that Evart athletes have been able to work around the elements during preseason practice. “We’ll be pretty good. We only lost one shot putter.”

Against competition in the Highland, “we have all but one guy coming back so we should be pretty good,” VanBuren said adding that in defending league and state titles, “I think we have the potential to get there. We just have to put the pieces to the puzzle.”

Lake City in the league and Saugatuck in postseason meets will be among the key opponents for the Wildcats, VanBuren added.
