Two Reed City golfers qualify for regionals

REED CITY -- Reed City’s boys golf team missed out on qualifying for the Division 3 regionals this week.

But Reed City junior Ben Schermerhorn and sophomore Spencer Battle shot well enough to qualify as individuals.

In the boys district tourney Ludington was first at 326 and Kent City sixth at 354. Reed City was seventh at 368. The top six teams move on to regionals.

Outside of the teams that qualify for regionals, the top six individuals also go. Schermerhorn was second in that group with an 83 and Battle fourth with an 89.

“Spencer Battle made significant changes for a sophomore and it all came together for him,” said Reed City co-coach Tim Webster. “He hits farther and straighter.

“Ben Schemerhorn has always been a solid player and had his best score. They both picked a good time to put their best scores on the board.”

Also for Reed City, Matt Kienitz shot a 97, followed by Kaden Phelps with 99 and Josh Hughston with 111.

The regionals are Thursday at the Lakewood Links in Ludington.

“It’s a fairly open course,” Webster said, “I would compare it to Katke.  I think you’ll see some good scores there.”
