BROOKLYN —  Evart’s boys cross country team was eighth and two runners took all-state honors on Saturday in the Division 4 state finals at the Michigan International Speedway.

Evart sophomore Austin Hamilton and senior teammate Josh Woods were 18th and 23rd in Division 4. Hamilton has usually been third or fourth, along with twin brother Alex, during the season for Evart behind Woods and his brother Nathan. His time was 16:59.2.

“I felt awesome,” Hamilton said. “It was my best race. I started out fast and tried to keep it up the whole time. I was doubting I could do it, but I pulled out a great race. At the two-mile mark, I knew I was having a good race.”

Josh Woods’ last high school race was clocked in 17:02.9.

“I ran as hard as I could,” Woods said. “It wasn’t exactly as I hoped or had expected, but it was still a good race. It was tough conditions, with a lot of mud in the last half mile.”

Also for Evart, Hamilton was 102nd (18:11.5), Parker Henry 135th (18:42.3), Nathan Woods 149th (18:55.2) and Tanner Ryan 173rd (19:17.7) and Jacob Quist 183rd (19:24.4).

Nathan Woods, “has been kind of sick recently and didn’t have it,” Josh Woods said. “He still has a couple of years.”

Evart’s individual placing in the team race with the same seven runners was 14th, 19th, 81st, 90th, 101st, 124th and 133rd.

The Wildcats had two individuals in the girls race. Brooke Belleville was 92nd (21:56.9). Sarah Nelson was 116th (22:19.8).
