Two Bucks earn all-state wrestling honors

LEROY — Two Pine River wrestlers placed in the top eight and earned a medal over the weekend in the state individual finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Abel Langworthy was sixth at 130 pounds and Kyle Nixon was seventh at 125.

“For Abel, it was a great finish,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “Last year he didn’t place and to come back all-state and to get to his 150 career wins, it was a good tournament for him.”

Langworthy went 3-3 over the weekend to end his season at 45-6. He pinned Case Kittel in 3:07 on Thursday. But then on Friday, he lost to Patrick Waterstradt of Athens Climax-Scotts 16-11. He won his next two matches by decisioning Tom Conway of Manchester 10-3 and Nick Barnhill of Jonesville 11-5.

On Saturday, Langworthy lost his final two matches 7-1 to Logan Curry of Martin and 5-4 to Waterstradt in a rematch.

Nixon was 3-2 and over the weekend and ended his season at 47-6. He decisioned Cole Menck of Lawton 10-8, then lost to Josh Wendling of New Lothrop 8-4 and to Cole Ragon of Dansville 6-2. He lost to Zach Glasco of Byron 8-0 and then decisioned Ryan Smith of Decatur 9-3.

“Kyle Nixon is a sophomore and a lot of sophomores don’t place the first time,” Jones said. “But he was able to place.”

Cason Rawson also wrestled for the Bucks and didn’t place with a 1-2 record. His season at 152 ended at 37-15.

“It gives us a lot to build on for next year,” Jones said. “Cason Rawson got a win down there.”

“It went pretty good,” Rawson said. “I had a good season. I got farther than I thought I would. It was awesome (at the state finals).”

REED CITY

Reed City’s two state qualifiers at the individual state finals both went 0-2 and didn’t place. Matt McGahey at 103 pounds was pinned in 3:15 by Logan Irey of Whitehall and lost 3-2 to Judah Caballero of Grosse Ile.

“Matt’s progress this year, he did a nice job of getting to state,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “We’re excited with his chances of being a state medalist next year.”

Adam Kehr at 135 pounds lost to Zehlin Storr of Leslie 16-7 and to Damian Johnson of Birch Run 8-5.

“I wrestled pretty good against some good kids,” Kehr said. “The kid I lost to in the first round wound up taking second place overall.

“Adam and Matt should be our team leaders next year,” Steig said. “They both had great seasons.”
