Tustin couple busy on the course

TUSTIN – Mary and Nick Gould have been with the Wednesday Couples League at Tustin Trails Golf Course and really can't think of a better place to be during a summer afternoon.

They're in their fourth season of Wednesday golf and usually get around 18 couples to attend. The season started in April and continues through May.

The Goulds have only been playing golf five years.

“I subbed for a girl,” Mary Gould said. “I ended up staying and started playing (regularly).”

Her husband had played in the past and found a good reason to return to the links.

The Tustin course is the main facility they play at now, along with some others.

While like the others, they play mainly for fun, the Goulds can take the game seriously at times.

“I chipped one in on 6,” Mary recalls. “I made the drive, chipped it off the hills an it went in.”

Irons are usually Nick's best weapons on the course. In fact, he doesn't use woods. But that suits his game just fine.

Most of the league golfers are from the area.

“It's a nice and not a really difficult course, but it's playable,” Nick said.

They are active members of the course. Nick also plays on Monday and Mary on Thursday nights.

But so far, the Hoaglunds find Wednesday Nights with Couples League action tough to beat.
