Turkey rendezvous set for March 30 at Baldwin

BALDWIN — The 32nd annual Turkey Hunters Rendezvous and State Calling Championships are set for March 30 at Baldwin High School.

The Pere Marquette Chapter of the Michigan Wild Turkey Hunters Association sponsors the event, which is labeled as the largest gathering of turkey hunters in the state.

Reed City’s Jim Maturen is among the event’s main organizers.

The event features vendor exhibits, door prizes, calling clinics turkey shoot, gun raffle and turkey dinner. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m.

The turkey shoot and turkey dinner are at the VFW Hall four miles north of Baldwin on M-37.

State senator Darwin Booher will be a guest speaker.

Doug Loomis of Ed’s Sport Shop has been a member of the Pere Marquette chapter for many years. He indicated the festival numbers have been down the last couple of years.

George Tharp of Ed’s Sport Shop said a majority of attendees are from the local area. There are several attendees from across the state.

“You see a lot of familiar faces,” he said.

The clinics, especially the ones that feature callers, are popular parts of the festival, Loomis said.
