BIG RAPIDS – Turkey hunters are gearing up for what could be a very promising season in the area.

The first season for those with limited licenses starts on April 23 locally in Area k. The second season will be April 30 to May 6. The guaranteed license hunt will be May 7-31.

“With this wetness, it’s been slowing things down,” Tanner Havens, of Frank’s Sporting Goods in Morley said. “We’ve got some warmer weather coming next week. I think the first hunting season should be pretty good, the way the forecast looks right now. Hopefully things will start to dry out a bit. That should improve things.

“Customers have told us there’s a number of birds they’ve been sighting lately.”

DNR wildlife biologist Pete Kailing also likes hunting prospects.

“Birds seem to survive the winter quite well,” Kailing said. “Hunters should remember all their tree stands should have been removed as of March 15 from state land.

“Beaver trapping continues through the end of the month. Spring is here.”
