Teams getting ready to start their seasons

REED CITY — While football got a head start on other fall sports with a Monday practice, other athletes are scheduled to get their preseasons going on Wednesday.

That includes Reed City volleyball with coach Don Patterson announcing that tryouts would be Wednesday through Friday. On Monday and Tuesday of this week, he was allowed to work with four players at a time. He said he would focus on particular skills in various groups.

Patterson is expecting around 30 players to his tryouts. The number of girls he keeps on each team “depends on the skill level,” Patterson said. “Typically it’s no more than 15. We’ve had as few as eight.”

Chris Schermerhorn is the junior varsity coach.

The season starts at Ludington on April 19. Reed City hosts a meet with Big Rapids and McBain on Aug. 30.

Katie Nostrant returns as volleyball coach at Evart and Jana Dennis at Pine River. Doug Emington is the new soccer skipper at Reed City. His season starts Aug. 20 at Northern Michigan Christian.

Jenny Hoaglund is back for another season with Pine River soccer.

During the summer, “I don’t know if any players did anything on their own but I know they did some dropin stuff where they went to a community field and did pickup games,” Hoaglund said. ‘We did a team camp just before the dead week started (Aug. 1-5). Other than that, I don’t know what anyone else has done.”

Cross country coaches are Susan Saladin at Reed City, Kevin Mills at Evart and Andi Bogart at Pine River.
