EVART — Evart junior running back Kyle Stokes has emerged as among the area’s best running backs early in the season.

In week two’s football loss to Harrison, Stokes had 115 yards on two catches and two touchdowns.

In the season-opening win against Fremont, he had 93 yards on

six carries.

He plays safety on defense but starts on offense.

“It hasn’t been going bad,” he said. “We’re scoring touchdowns and getting yards.”

Stokes has been getting a lot of his yards on cuts and using his speed. He indicated the team’s performance was equal in the first two games despite losing one and winning the other.

As a receiver, “I have good hands, good concentration, good speed,” he said.

Evart has been blending a good mix of passing with running in its offense, he indicated.

“We have to wrap up (on defense) and on offense we have to block and make plays,” Stokes said

He was busy during the summer and said offseason work has paid off so far.

On Sept. 8, Evart was at Pine River.

“They’re going to be fast,” Stokes said prior to the game. “We have to do what we practice.”

Evart won 15-7. Stokes had a TD run of 23 yards. He gained 38 yards on five tries.

Stokes was also an excellent track athlete for Evart and indicated the two sports complement each other.

Evart is home Friday.
