EVART — Kyle Stokes is coming off a memorable spring track and field season at Evart, and can hardly wait for his junior sports season to begin.

His sophomore track season ended at the state final in the Division 4 state meet.

He was on a 800-meter relay team that was sixth in 1:33.80 and included Cody Pritchard, Scott Martin and Danny Griffin. The same foursome was fourth in the 400-meter relay in 44.62 seconds.

The team had finished first at most of its meets during the season. He also was fifth on the 1,600-meter relay squad that was fifth in 3:47.84 and included Pritchard, Ben Randall and Griffin.

Stokes also had a strong season in the sprints. In the 100, he was third at the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Division 4 team state meet with a personal record of 11.44. His personal record was 23.08 seconds in the 200-meter dash and he was second at the regional meet. He placed seventh at 23.23 seconds at the Division 4 state final.

“In the 200, I came off an injury and ran a PR (23.08) at Alma,” Stokes recalled. “In the (Highland) conference meet, we Pred in the 4x1.”

Stokes said he improved “a lot” from his freshman season.

“It’s probably because of experience,” he said.

In the open events, “I get a pretty good start,” Stokes added.

He usually was on the third leg of the relay, and said “catching us up” was his biggest challenge. Stokes usually handed off to Evart sprinting standout Danny Griffin.

Stokes now is getting ready for football, which starts its practices on Aug. 7. He also plays basketball at Evart.
