Stieg bids for success at community college
REED CITY -- Courtanee Stieg was at the Ferris State student recreational center recently working on her basketball skills and for good reason.
The former Reed City athlete will be returning to Alpena Community College in the fall and playing in her second and final campaign for the women’s basketball team.
Stieg graduated from Reed City in 2010 after playing soccer and basketball for the Coyotes.
“It was good, we didn’t quite make it as far as we wanted to but we made it all right, I guess,” Stieg said.
Stieg said she saw some action although perhaps not as much as she would have preferred.
“I’ve played pretty much all over,”she said. “I was one of the taller girls. They didn’t have much height last yaer,.”
Stieg stands at 5-8. Rebounding turned out to be her main role.
On the collegiate level, “It was a lot harder than high school,” she said. “The contact level is just so much higher. It’s more physical, a lot different.”
Stieg decided to go with her close friend, Karena Hipkins of Evart to ACC. Hipkins wound up playing basketball and softball as a freshman.
“I talked to the coaches and they gave me a scholarship so I went up there,” Stieg said.
Stieg is looking forward to the 2012-13 season. She’s focused this summer in getting in shape and improved on her ball control.
“We have probably five returnees and six or seven new girls,” Stieg said. “It will be pretty mixed. We have a lot of height this year which is hoping to help us a lot. We played together one time at camp and we looked pretty good.”
