Spring sports teams begin practice seasons

REED CITY  —  Spring sport teams opened on Monday with every team forced to stay inside because of the weather. With the excessive amount of snow still on the ground, it’s likely practice schedule will go indoors soon although some schools have actual events slated toward the end of this month.

REED CITY

Practices started on Monday with teams utilizing the indoor facilities. Softball coach Roger Steig said tryouts are set for the first three days, then the split will be made for the JV and varsity teams.

“We have a lot of snow on the field, We’re looking at a few weeks yet before we can be outside,” Steig said, adding that a game is scheduled prior to spring break but is unlikely to take place

During the upcoming spring break, the team will be traveling down to Florida, Steig indicated, with a chance to get in some workouts.

Marty Shaffer is the new baseball coach. Bryan Hall returns as soccer coach and Brent and Vikki Michell are track skippers. Katrina Wray is golf coach.

Hall said he’ll use the first week of practice to look at JV players that he may want to move up to the varsity. Soccer matches are set for March 26 and April 1, weather-permitting.

PINE RIVER

Shawn Ruppert, baseball coach, said he’ll probably do some work with players later in the week. He’s giving those players who were on the basketball team off until Monday. The basketball season ended last Friday. Most of the baseball players were on the hoops team.

“I’ll work with the JV team for the first week,” Ruppert said.

He’s not anticipating right now being able to get a game in by the end of the month.

Laura Mumby returns as softball coach. Eric Gebhard is back as boys track coach while Jan Burch is the new girls skipper.

EVART

Pat Craven returns as baseball coach while Jeff Bressler is the new softball skipper.

Both coaches noted they have a scheduled date for March 19, which is also unlikely to be completed.

Dennis Peacock is coaching the boys track squad, which is the two-time state  champ for MITCA. The new girls track coach is Ken Wellems.
