Spring Valley Friday couples league remains popular

REED CITY — Friday evenings at Spring Valley Golf Course mean Friday’s Couple League action.

Steve Sleger is working as secretary for the league that tees off for nine-hole rounds in late afternoons every Friday. League action started on April 17 and continues until Sept. 18.

The number of couples varies from week to week, Sleger said.

“You don’t have to show up every week which makes it convenient for everybody,” he said.

The league averages about 20 couples a week. Most of the couples are married.

“They come from all over,” Sleger said. “They come from Evart. We have one couple that lives on Kings Highway.”

Some of the couple groups also play in other leagues.

“We’ve been lucky,” Sleger said. “We haven’t been rained out or snowed out this year. We have a lot of snow birds that go back and forth to here.”

Golfers come from a variety of ages, including their 80s.

“They play pretty good too,” Sleger said. “They’re also put into flights.”

The Scotch Doubles format is used.

“You take turns hitting the ball,” Sleger said. “You both tee off and select which ball is the best.”

Then the couple switches off on who hits the ball.

“This league has been like it since I don’t remember how long,” Sleger said. “We have three teams on each hole. You meet a lot of people that way.”

Sleger has been a member of the course since 1991. He also plays on the Thursday Men’s League and occasionally on the Sunday Scramble League.
