Sportsmen share unique hunting and fishing trip
BIG RAPIDS - Area sportsman Terry Getts had an interesting brook trout trip earlier this fall in the Upper Peninsula.
Getts is an active member of the Reed City Sportsman Club.
He made the trip near Cedarville with other area sportsmen such as Craig Vining and Randy Earnest.
"We got 24 fish, brook trout," Getts said. "They range from 10 inches to 14 inches. They were pretty nice trout for that species. We all did well. It was the last week of trout season. We always go up at that time because the bugs aren't as bad.
"We didn't get to fish as much as we wanted to. We helped a friend cut some firewood for a couple of days. We did well for what fishing we did. We got our deer blinds fixed up."
Earlier this fall, Letts and other area hunters, including Ted Platz, Al Remus and Howie and Lyle Lodholtz were out goose hunting and shot 11 geese near Getts' Big Rapids residence.
"We did well," he said. "That's the first time we limited this year. You're only allowed three apiece and the six of us got 18 combined."
Getts said he's bow hunted once.
"There's a lot of red oak acorns but hardly any white oak," he said. "The bucks we've seen at a distance are nice looking. It's a matter of getting in the right spot so you can get a shot at them. I'm surprised at the amount of bigger bucks around. The points restriction rule has been helping. I've shot enough deer in my life that I don't have to shoot a deer every time I've been in the woods. We like being the woods. This time of year is about the best time to be out."
