Sports ready for practice seasons

REED CITY — Football got the jump on other sports by starting its practices on Monday. Other sports were scheduled to start their practices on Wednesday.

Reed City also has soccer with Cody Jacobs as coach, volleyball with Don Patterson and cross country with Brad Smith. Evart has cross country with Kevin Mills and volleyball with Katie Nostrant. Pine River has soccer with Jenny Hoaglund, cross country with Ross Vrieze and volleyball with Jana Dennis.

Jacobs is a first-year coach for soccer which has a 7-9 p.m. practice scheduled from Wednesday to Friday.

“We’re anxious to get started,” he said.

Reed City’s first match is Aug. 22 at Northern Michigan Christian. The Coyotes will play the host school, Forest Area and Buckley.

Jacobs anticipates five to six returning players.

“It’s looking like just a varsity team and unfortunately no JV squad this year,” he said.

Key returning varsity players include senior Quinton Kichak, sophomore Seth Phelps, junior Taylor Cornell, senior Tyler White and senior Kurtis Bracket.

Kichak is a forward and is expected to be one of Reed City’s top offensive players. Phelps is an outside mid.

“He’s a workhorse for us,” Jacobs said. “He runs that sideline pretty well.”

Cornell and White will anchor the backline. Bracket will play a middle spot.
