LEROY -- Pine River traveled to Benzie Central Invitational on Saturday and lost in the first round of playoffs.

In pool play, the Bucks lost to Ludington 25-21, 25-13, split with Mason County Eastern 22-25, 25-20 and split with Boyne City 25-15, 24-26.

In the playoffs, Pine River lost to Ludington 25-16, 28-26.

For the Bucks, Cayman Gatt contributed 13 kills, 30 digs, and six aces; Elizabeth Whitley had 12 kills, 18 digs and 32 assists; Jamie Justin collected 14 kills and five blocks; Alexis Stokely had 13 digs, seven aces, 18 assists; Kassy Nelson had 20 digs and seven kills and Christie Nelson led the team defensively with 31 digs.

“It was definitely a day of struggle for us,” said Pine River coach Jana Dennis. “We tried many different lineups to find some chemistry. Girls did a great job of stepping into new roles. We ended the day strong it was just a little too late. Now we just need to keep building on that ending. Christie Nelson did a great job of stepping into the libero position and kept us in many games.”

EVART -- Evart’s girls volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker at Montabella 3-2 in nonleague play last Thursday.

Evart won the first and third games 25-19, 25-17 while losing the second 25-16. The fourth game came down to the wire with Montabella sneaking out a 26 -24 win, forcing a fifth game. Montabella prevailed 15-11.

Evart was at McBain Tuesday for its only match this week.


SPARTA –- Pine River girls varsity cross country team finished sixth out of 10 teams at the Sparta Invitational on Saturday.

Leading the Bucks with a sixth-place finish overall was junior Devyn Powell (21.16). Running season best times for the team were Jasmine Blackrick (24.17) 28th, Erica Loop (24.18) in 29th and Zyporia Orange-Moored (26.32) in 47th.

Rachel Hartline was 39th in 25:12.22 while Julia Lucas was 41st in 25:34.4.

For the boys, Trevor Holmes took second in 17:14.37 while Ben Rigling was 14th in 18:37.56. Greg Schaefer was 22nd in 19:16.88 and Tony Moore was 26th in 19:22.97.

Pine River finished second behind Holland Black River.

Pine River junior varsity runners set some pretty good times on a hot day for racing at the Sparta Invitational. Josh Phillips (19.41) ran a seasonal best time. Dustin Ecker (22:00) and Eugene Sturdavant (22.21) also competed for PR.

LANSING -- Evart girls were 23rd in the White Division with 517 points at Friday’s Michigan State Spartan Invitational. North Muskegon won the event with 113 points. The Wildcat boys were 36th and Big Rapids was 37th in the Elite Division. Waterford Mott took first with 191 points.

For the Evart boys, David Zinger was 41st in 16:28, Max Hodges 137th in 17:26, Santana Scott, 167th in 17:43, Zach Douglas 235th in 18:54, Akira Inoue 250th in 19:40 and Ryan Tuttle 233rd in 19:57.

Evart’s girls were led by Grace Hamilton, who was 35th in 21:43, Mara VanOrder, who was 91st in 23:20, Clairese Clark who was 105th in 23:50, Taylor McLachlan, who was 138th in 25:16, Kaitlyn Parsons, who was 148th in 25:50, Steve Duey, who was 174th in 29:10 and Natalie Belleville, who was 178th in 33:46.

Chad Zagacki was 22nd in 17:33 for Reed City’s boys while Drake Walker was 103rd in 19:39, Matt McGahey 118th in 20;01 and Kris Kellogg 120th in 20:03.

Reed City’s girls were led by McKenzie Cornelius, who was 73rd in 22;51, Marie Kinsey 170th in 27:40, Hannah Cowsert 185th in 34:24 and Mariah Cowsert, no place available, in 37:03.

Cornelius came in fourth with a time of 22:56 at the recent McBain Invitational. The time was printed incorrectly in last week’s briefs.

HESPERIA — The Big Rapids boys and Chippewa Hills girls cross country teams captured league jamboree meets Tuesday, Sept. 18.

For the boys, Reed City was sixth with 159 points. Reed City was eighth for the girls with 213 points.

Reed City’s Chad Zagacki was third overall, clocking an 18:47. Matt McGahey and Kris Kellogg were 29th and 30th respectively, finishing with a 21:41 and 21:44. Drake Walker was 36th in the race with a 22:02.

McKenzie Cornelius was 20th to lead all Reed City harriers. Marie Kinsey was 46th in 32:15, while Hannah Cowsert was 48th in 37:26 and Mariah Cowsert was 49th in 43:36.


REED CITY -- The Reed City Coyotes tied Mason County Central at Scottville on Thursday 2-0. The Coyotes were down 2-0 at halftime but came back for a 2-2 tie. Ricky Droke scored both Reed City goals, assisted by Quinton Kichak on one and Eric Voelker.

On Tuesday, Sept, 11, the Coyotes lost to Fremont Providence Christian on the road.

Caleb Lohrmann was in goal for the Coyotes against MCC and in the second half against Providence Christian. Ben Schermerhorn was in goal the first half against Providence Christian.

By using Lohrman, “we get to see more field play from Ben which is very helpful,” said Reed City coach Dave Mix,

Reed City entered this week at 4-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Central State Activities Association.

Saturday, the Coyotes play at home against Cadillac. Game time is 10 a.m.
