Sports briefs for June 20


REED CITY — It’s getting into the late stretches of youth baseball and softball for Reed City youth leagues.

Lisa Morrison, secretary of the Reed City-Evart league, noted that T-Ball and 7-8-year-old coach-pitch action would take place until the end of this month.

Meanwhile, 12-and-under and 10-and-under all-star teams are forming and will start play next month.

Also 13-14-year-old baseball and softball teams are continuing to play and their seasons will go until the end of the month, Morrison noted.

  • REED CITY — Reed City’s LeBaron 12-and-under baseball team has finished the season at 12-0 thanks to a 6-0 win over Evart 2 last Thursday and a 13-3 win at Evart on Friday.

The winners used three different pitchers with Alex Verschueren, Garrett Sprague and Jeffrey Phenix on Thursday.

Phenix, Adam Strach and Brandon Wirth had two hits apiece while Nathan Worrall and Zach Wirgau had one hit.

In the Friday game, Hunter Morrison pitched six innings and fanned 13 batters. He had two hits while Jeff Phenix had three hits.

Strach, Kent Beemer, Worrall and Wirgau had two hits apiece.

Coach Tom Strach said the 12-and-under all-star team starts action on July 10.


REED CITY — AYSO will be hosting a British Soccer Camp in Reed City the week of Aug. 6 to Aug. 10. The camp will run Monday through Friday of that week and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s team of 1,100 British soccer coaches flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs.

Challenger’s new 1,000 teaches coaching syllabus provide an innovative daily regimen of foot skills, moves, juggling, tactical practices and daily tournament play. The coaches use this daily tournament to teach the players about life, customs and traditions of other countries.

Camp sessions will be going from 9 to 10 a.m. and 1- 2 p.m. for ages 3 to 4; 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2:30-4 p.m. for ages 5 and 6; 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.. for ages 7 to 9 and 9 a.m. to noon, 1-4 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 10-14.

LEROY — Pine River’s volleyball team hosted a youth camp last week and will be at a Saginaw Valley team camp this summer. The Bucks are also set for action July 9 and 16 at White Cloud.

PR coach Jana Dennis said there were 25 girls at the youth camp. “We had more of the older girls and not as many of the young girls,” said Dennis, saying that seventh, eighth- and ninth-graders formed the highest numbers. “We spent time working on different parts of the game and had drills and some fun activity.”
