CHEERLEADING

Evart takes second

EVART— Evart’s competitive cheer team was second in its division at the Shepherd Invitational on Saturday.

It was Evart’s second meet of the season after competing in the opener Dec. 13 at Houghton Lake.

“I saw an improvement in Round 2,” Evart coach Marty Pattee said. “Overall, we have a lot to work on. It’s early in the season and we’re young. We’ll see how things go.”

Round 2 is the gymnastics and jumps round.

The next meet is Jan. 10 at Cedar Springs.

BOYS BASKETBALL

LEROY — Pine River returns to action Jan. 6 at Manton with a 3-0 record. The Bucks last game was Dec. 15 at home with Chippewa Hills. The Bucks are planning on scrimmaging Mason County Central during the holiday break.

“I’m pleased overall, I’m very pleased with our defense,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “Offensively, we’ve moved the ball well. Our shots haven’t fallen at the pace we need to. I’m confident that will happen. We’re getting the looks we want.”

The break between games is more than three weeks, which is why Goodenow wants to have a scrimmage.
