CROSS COUNTRY

REED CITY -- Brad Smith returns as Reed City cross country coach this season and is working on boosting the numbers for the Coyotes.

Practices started last week and Reed City had four boys and three girls on the roster. The two returning boys runners are Matt Mcgahy and Drake Walker. The other boys are Kris Kellogg and Chad Zagaki. He has three new girl runners in McKenzie Cornelius, Mariah Cowsert and Marie Kinsey.

But Smith is also hopeful of getting more runners for a season that starts Aug. 25 at Chippewa HIlls.

“At the initial meeting I had during the spring, there wee 10 girls,” Smith said.

SOCCER

REED CITY -- Reed City’s boys soccer team starts its season this Saturday at the Leland Tournament. Reed City plays Charlevoix in the first match and will play either Leland or Manistee in the second one.

Matches will be two 30-minute halves.

The first home match will be Aug. 27 against Crossroads. It does not appear there will be enough numbers for a junior varsity squad, Coyote coach Dave Mix said.
