RAVENNA —  Reed City wrestling had a solid outing on Saturday at the Ravenna Invitational that featured 10 high school squads. The Coyotes only brought eight wrestlers but managed to place third as a team and had three wrestlers win their respective individual weight classes.

Matt McGahey was the champion at 119 while Adam Kehr at 152 and Devin Ward at 160 also took home individual championships.

“We were outstanding,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “We only took eight kids and six of them placed. The two that didn’t place were only one away from placing.”

Jon Green took second place at 171. Andre Burks at 189 and Evan Skiver 215 both took home fourth place honors.

The Reed City Team Invitational is Jan. 4.

Pine River 2-0

LEROY — Pine River defeated Kingsley 61-10 and Manistee 64-15 Wednesday night (Dec. 18) while senior Kyle Nixon picked up wins No. 150 and 151 in his Bucks’ wrestling career.

Both matches were in the Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference. Pine River is 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Besides Nixon, also going 2-0 were Nate Park at 103, Jordon Stone at 112. Tony Moore at 119, Robert Rogatzki at 125, Elliott VanDreumel at 130, Darwin Dean at 135, Philip Rogatzki at 140 and Adam Langworhty at 171.

”Manistee last year was one of the toughest teams in the conference,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “We were hoping we’d have a good showing. for this early in the year, they looked good against Manistee.”


Pine River 39, Marion 18

MARION — Pine River’s girls basketball team improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Highland with a 39-18 topping of Marion on Thursday

For the Bucks, Kassy Nelson scored 12 points while Michelle Kelsey added six. Paige Esiline, Erin Koetje and Cheyanna Rizor had four apiece.

The Bucks are off until Jan. 7 when they play home against McBain Northern Michigan Christian.


Local honors

Several area athletes were recently named to the Pioneer Dream team for volleyball and football.

First team honorees for volleyball were Jacolyn Mullins of Reed City. Honorees for second team were Kassy Nelson of Pine River and Alaina Woodard and Heather Tacey of Reed City.

In football, Reed City swept honors with coach of the year for Monty Price, offensive player of the year for quarterback Chad Samuels and defensive player of the year for Eric Grannis.

Other area players on defense were lineman Austin Hansen of Reed City, linebacker Robert Burge of Evart and defensive lineman Tyler McCurry of Pine River.

Also on offense were running backs Jon Green and Andre Jones, plus wide receiver Josh Saez and offensive linemen Dean Eichenberg, T.J. Patterson and Darrien Sweet of Reed City and quarterback Jacob Fortune and wide receiver Jacob Hopkins of Evart.

Honorable mention picks were quarterback Skyler Nelson and running back Brandon Fulks of Pine River, linebacker Larry VanBuren of Evart and offensive lineman Ian McDonald and defensive back Patrick Jobes of Reed City.
