Sports News in Brief

MANTON — The Pine River girls basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season on Dec. 10 against the Manton Rangers 40-23.

Pine River was led by Kassy Nelson who contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Bucks.

Other big nights for the Bucks came from Michelle Kelsey with 11 points and seven steals while Cheyanna Rizor added seven points and five rebounds for Pine River.

McBAIN — The Evart girls basketball team dropped a 64-41 contest to McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Dec. 10

Mara VanOrder had 10 points for Evart while Tabitha Turley had nine points and Natalie Belleville had eight points.

Evart took third place among 10 teams in its division in the Houghton Lake Competitive Cheer Meet on Saturday to open the season.

“We were first among Highland Conference opponents,” said Evart coach Marty Pattee. “The two teams that finished ahead of us (overall) are teams that were a division up from us last year. But their school populations dropped. I’m not used to competing against those two (Harrison and Houghton Lake).”

Route 3 was Evart’s strongest round, Pattee said. The first round features motions and jumps. Round 2 has gymnastics skills. Round 3 features stunts and tumbling.

Pine River also competed.

“They did pretty good,” said Pine River coach Tiffany Lindquist. “It wasn’t their highest scores. But it was just to get them on the floor and see what we need to work on. We didn’t have our third round complete. We’re working on finishing our third round and improve our rounds 1 and 2.”

Evart is at Grandville Jan. 4. Pine River is at Brethren Jan.11.
