Pine River wins

BOYNE CITY — The Pine River Bucks girls basketball squad picked up a 51-42 non-conference victory on Saturday in a make-up game against Boyne City.

The Bucks improved to 4-2 overall with a 2-1 record in Highland Conference play.

Pine River was led by Kassy Nelson who netted 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds, swiped three steals and dished four assists. Michelle Kelsey contributed 12 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Bucks and Julie Justin had six points and six assists in the winning effort.

“For not playing in two weeks, I’m happy,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “We played well offensively and got a good win before getting back into our normal schedule after break.”


Evart second

GRANDVILLE  — Evart took second at the Grandville Invitational Saturday in competitive cheer action.

The Wildcats took second, finishing behind last year’s Division 4 state championship Michigan Center team.

“I was pretty happy with the girls overall,” said coach Marty Pattee of Evart. “We did make some mistakes. They did well. It was a long day. It’s a large meet. I like the girls to go down there. it helps us become a better team.”

Evart is at Cedar Springs on Saturday.
