Sophomore having championship season at 103 pounds for Pine River

LEROY  — Dylan Stephens is having quite a sophomore season at 103 pounds for Pine River’s wrestling team.

Stephens was among the Bucks who won an individual district title recently at Farwell in Division 4 action. He was second at Rogers City last weekend in the individual regionals.

Earlier this season, Stephens had to settle for second place at the Reed City Invitational.

“He was pretty tough,” Stephens said of his opponent.

In his first 33 matches, Stephens was 28-5.

“Last year, I was 23-6, so this is better,” he said, adding that a year of maturity and experience has been critical. He’s also had quite a few pins.

Stephens and his team will be at the state team final this weekend at Central Michigan University and at the individual final March 3-5 at Auburn Hills.

“I hope to place at state,” he said. “I didn’t make it last year. I didn’t wrestle at regionals. I have to move more on the bottom.”

Riding on top has been a strength for Stephens this season.

The Bucks were in the state quarterfinals last season.

“I’m hoping we can make it past that,” Stephens said.
