REMUS — Reed City senior Evan Skiver was a Division 3 district champ Saturday at 215 pounds pinning Lakeview’s James Smith in action at Chippewa Hills.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “I started wrestling my sophomore year and never thought in three years I would be here making a name for myself.”

Senior teammate Devin Ward pinned Shelby’s Juan Cavazos in the third-place match to advance to regionals. Also moving on to the regional for the Coyotes were Jimmy Bywater (103) and Alex Brummel (130).

“Jimmy Bywater was seeded seventh and Brummel sixth. They wrestled well,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said.

The four Coyotes will be at the Allendale regional Saturday.

Reed City lost 66-4 to Chippewa Hills on Wednesday in the Division 3 district finals at Big Rapids.

It was Chippewa Hills’ 11th straight district title.

Reed City’s Dylan Chrispell won both of his matches at 215.

He beat John Spedowski 16-8 in the championship.

“That was a nice match for Dylan,” Steig said. “He lost pretty handedly to that kid Saturday (at the conference championship), and he was really able to turn that match around.”

The Coyotes beat Big Rapids 54-25 in the district semifinal.

“From where we were at the beginning of the year to where we are now, this team has come a long way,” Steig said. “I’m proud of how they wrestled.”
