LEROY — Tanner Shimel is a junior pitcher-outfielder-catcher playing a key role in Pine River’s fast start on the ball diamond this season.

This marks his second full varsity season.

“Last year it went pretty good,” he said. “We had a bad end of the season in a (extra innings) loss.”

As a pitcher, Shimel indicated a fastball and slider are his best pitches.

“I’m hoping to hit a little better,” he said. “I hit .410 last year, I’m trying to get over that this year. Form is a key. You have to get your weight back, watch the curve ball and don’t get out in front.”

As a catcher, Shimel indicated his strength is blocking and throwing to second.

Pine River is off to a 9-2 start.

As a team, “we should be all right,” Shimel said. “We’re young. We’re looking all right. We have a lot of good pitchers this year.”
