Senior wrestler eyes all-state season for Pine River squad

LEROY — Jeff Gross qualified for the state finals last season and the Pine River senior wrestler has designs on doing it again.

He’ll be wrestling 171 this winter after going at 160 pounds last winter.

Pine River qualified for the regional as a team. Gross was happy with his individual season. It was his best season of high school wrestling so far.

Coming into the wrestling season Gross stayed in shape with his involvement in football, and played a major role for the district championship football team

“I came in and weight-lifted for football,” he said.

Gross is looking at qualifying for the state final again his season and placing this time.

“I’ll have to work harder,” he said, adding that rolling on the mat will be his strength. He’s working to get better on takedowns.

The Bucks have 35 wrestlers on the roster.

“I’m hoping we make it to team state finals this year,” Gross said.

He’s expecting the Bucks to have plenty of depth again this season.

“We want to go out there and make a statement right off the bat,” he said.

The season will start Dec. 13 at the Tri County Invitational. The Bucks have a home quad on Dec. 17 and are at the Marquette Challenge Dec. 20 and at the St. Louis Invitational on Jan. 3.
