EVART — The shot put and discus have been productive points for the Evart Wildcats senior Dean Marsh.

He played football last fall, weight-lifted in the winter and is now getting ready for track and field season. Marsh will be in shot put and discus again this season. He won the discus in the Highland Conference and shot put in the regionals.

“Last year was probably the best so far,” he said.

Marsh’s best throw in the shot put has been 45 feet and 135 feet in the discus. This season, he’s looking for 47-to-50 in the shot and 140 in the discus.

“I need to keep working on my technique and get faster through it, and keep my weight back on my right foot,” he said.

Marsh is confident his team can be strong in the throws again this season.

“Hopefully we can go to win state again,” Marsh said.

The Wildcats are the two-time defending MITCA team state champs.

Marsh has been to the state finals individually in the shot put and discus, and is hopeful of returning in both events this season.

The Wildcats are on break this week after four weeks of practice. Despite the weather, Marsh was able to accomplish a few things.

“We’ve been able to throw a shot put here and there,” Marsh said.

Evart is also defending league champions. When the Wildcats get back, from break, they are set to be at Mesick April 17 and at Morley Stanwood April 19. The first home meet is April 24 with Kingsley.

“We’re pretty confident,” Marsh said.
