Senior golfer continues to play very well

REED CITY - Ron Lusby is in his 80s but he still loves to play golf.

He's a Leroy resident and is an active member of the Masters League, which plays every Monday afternoon at Spring Valley Golf Course. It's a league for those over age 55. He's played in it since the early 1990s.

"I like to play," said Lusby, who also plays in the Spring Valley Sunday Scramble League. "Once in awhile I'll play in Big Rapids."

He usually stays in the 40s or gets lower for nine holes.

His partner for 15 years has been Roger Teem.

Lusby has golfed 30 years, and has lived in LeRoy since 1992. He also has golfed at Tustin Trails Golf. But he especially likes being at Spring Valley and being with his friends.

Lusby is up year-round and was eager to play golf this spring.

"I like it when I score well," he said. "I played softball all my life ever since high school. I played softball on three continents, including Africa and Europe. I was in the Air Force."

He retired from the Air Force in 1959 and was a mechanic. He's been a welder all his life.

"I came up here and worked at Gardner-Denver a little bit," he said. "I was in Kansas City and worked at TransWorld Airlines for 29 years."

Lusby hopes to play golf as long as he could. He occasionally walks during his round of golf but usually takes a cart.
