Senior duo leading the way for Pine River wrestling
LEROY — Seniors Mitchell Kelsey and Abel Langworthy will be among the standout wrestlers for Pine River this season.
Kelsey was 135 and 140 last season for Pine River and will be at the same weights this season.
“Last year, a lot of my matches went into overtime,” he said. “We were at Forest Hills Eastern and we won a match in triple overtime.”
Kelsey wants to wind up at the state finals in Auburn Hills this season.
“I have to work hard in practice and be here every day,” he said.
Kelsey ran cross country in the fall to get ready for wrestling.
“I feel at least 30 percent improved,” he said. “I focus on that I’m going to beat this opponent.”
He wants to work on his takedowns.
Pine River’s season started this week.
“The team is going to be real strong this year,” Kelsey said. “I think we can make it to state.”
Langworthy was at 125 last season and will be at 130 this year. He was runner-up at districts and regionals and qualified for state finals the second time in his career. A two-time conference champ, he was one match away from placing at the state meet.
Placing at the state finals will be a key goal for Langworthy.
“I’m good at taking down people and I’m good at escaping,” Langworthy said. “I want to work at escaping even more and move on the bottom.
“The team looks fairly strong,” Langworthy said. “We could still improve.”
