Senior Reed City wrestler eyes strong season

REED CITY – Reed City’s wrestling team is off to a 5-1 start, and veteran wrestler Anakin Andrus is hoping he can continue to contribute to the team’s success.

Andrus is coming off a soccer season in the fall. As of preseason, he was the only senior on the wrestling team.

He’s been wrestling seven years and is entering his final season on varsity.

“I’ve met a lot of good people and I’ve had a lot of good teammates,” he said. “One of them would be my mentor Ryan Simmons. He’s taught me everything I know. I’ve met some very good wrestlers along the way who have taught me the sport and what it’s all about.

“In wrestling, if you want to work for something, you have to be willing to put in a little bit of suffering.”

Andrus was at 112 last season and plans on being at the class again this year.

Last year he was 16-9 while wrestling a partial season.

For this year, Andrus is looking at qualifying for the state meet.

“It will take a lot of hard work, a lot of soul searching and a lot of teamwork, and work in and out of the wrestling room and weight room,” Andrus said. “My strengths are agility, and I’m very smart at the moves I pick. I’m very very meticulous. I’m strong for my size, that’s what I’ve been told.”

During the spring, Andrus will continue to work out to stay in shape.

Andrus hopes to help the Coyotes be a factor in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) Gold Division.
