Droke collects hat trick in 4-1 win for Reed City

REED CITY — Ricky Droke made his final home game in a Reed City soccer uniform a memorable one. Droke scored a hat trick to lead the Coyotes to a 4-1 victory over Mason County-Eastern in non-league action Monday. Trevor Nelson also scored for the Coyotes, who improved to 5-9-1. “They worked hard for it,” said Reed City coach Dave Mix. “Mason County Eastern is obviously solid. But we got our one-two possessions which led to some good opportunities and we finished them (Monday). That was the other big thing.” Droke, who now has 17 goals this season, broke a scoreless tie with 15:10 left in the first half. Reed City then scored a key second goal with 31:04 left in the game when Trevor Nelson converted. Less than two minutes later, Droke put in a rebounded shot for his third goal. His fourth one came with 11:03 to play. It was Droke’s second hat trick of the season. “I think we really came out well as far as the whole package,” Mix said, adding that the second goal big for the Coyotes. “That was the goal we needed to give ourselves a little bit of a lift. Trevor did that last year in the district finals too, gave us a big lift.” The Coyotes used three goalkeepers including starter Caleb Lohrmann, who left in the first half after running into one player from each team while making a save. Ben Schermerhorn took over and was relieved late in the game by Troy Giese, who made a leaping save with 50 seconds to play. MCE fell to 2-7-3. Cliff Lawson played goalie for the Cardinals. “The first half was extremely equal with no intensity from either team,” said MCE coach Dan Hunter. “Both were flat That’s why it was 1-1. The second half, their No. 3 (Droke) and 11 (Quinten Kichak) had great intensity. We picked it up in the second half and had a lot more shots.” The Coyotes play at Big Rapids in Central State Activities Association play today. “We’ve been playing strong but we’ve been playing some top quality teams,” said Reed City senior Kolt Slater. “(Monday), we had lots of heart and our passing was better. We played a strong defense.”
