Scott set to score points for Evart in distance races

EVART — Santana Scott has been working with this Evart Wildcat boys track team to reach various goals this season.

The Wildcats just need the schedule maker to cooperate.

The Wildcats were finaly able to get some action in aftere a slow start, including the Mohawk Relays April 19 at Morley Stanwood.

“You rely on your teammates and it’s fun to change up a little bit rather than your regular schedule,” Scott said after the Mohawk Relays.

In his sophomore season, Scott was a freshman on the 2013 Evart team that won its second straight MITCA team title. He missed qualifying for the MHSAA state meet by a second.

“I’m going to try to break 10 in the two and a 4:30 in the mile,” Scott said. “I also hope my 4x8 team gets the school record. I have to slow down in the first (mile), quit being so anxious. Slowing down a few seconds in the first will save me the race.”

The 3,200-meter run will be the best event for Scott. His best time overall has been 10:18. He recently clocked a 10:31.

“We have some uprising freshman, and are solid in the 800, 400, middle distance,” Scott said.

He’s looking at the 1,600-meter run as his second best event with hopes for a 4:30 by the end of the season.

The Wildcats have won the last two MITCA state titles but Scott isn’t quite sure what this season’s team could do.

““We haven’t had enough races to show what we can do,” Scott said. “We’re hoping for the best so far.”

The weather wasn’t the greatest in preseason, but distance runners like Scott were still able to get in their time.

“We had a nice spring break and have been running every day (except Sunday),” Scott said.

Evart is at Marion for the regionals on Saturday.
