Reed City 1-1

REED CITY — The Coyotes finished 1-1 on Wednesday, beating Newaygo 42-24 and losing to Hesperia 60-18. Ryan Simmons (103 pounds) and Dylan Chrispell (189) each were 2-0 for Reed City. Reed City wrestles Saturday at the Central State Activities Association Gold Division tournament at Hesperia.

Pine River 2-0

LEROY — Pine River’s wrestling team defeated Mancelona and Lake City in dual meets on Wednesday and won the dual meet portion of the Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference. The conference tournament is Saturday at Manistee.


Montabella 57, Reed City 50

BLANCHARD — Emily Libey led the Coyotes with 18 points on Tuesday (Jan. 26) while Lauren Voelker added 10 points.

Brenna Westhoff and Kamryn Myers each had six points. Reed City trailed 33-23 at halftime, but cut the deficit to one with two minutes remaining.

Montabella 53, Evart 32

BLANCHARD — Evart trailed 26-12 after the first quarter and 34-19 at halftime in Monday’s nonleague loss to Montabella. It was 46-25 after the third quarter. Mara VanOrder had 19 points and nine rebounds for Evart, while Cyana Dellar contributed six points and seven boards.

Evart is home Thursday against McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

The Wildcats lost 72-17 to McBain on Friday. VanOrder scored eight points, Brooke Belleville had five points and Macey Wallace had four.


Lake City 64, Pine River 54 

LAKE CITY — Mason Powell scored 16 points, while Tyler Wing added 12 points for the Bucks in this loss on Thursday.

“I’m not pleased with our defensive effort,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said.

The Bucks were home with Evart on Tuesday and will be home with Beal City on Friday.


Holmquist scores 23 points

ANGOLA, Ind. — The Trine men’s basketball team dominated the second half to notch an 80-67 victory over MIAA foe Calvin College on Saturday in Hershey Hall.

It was a back-and-forth ballgame until Trine took the lead with 15:45 to play and never looked back. They led by as much as 18 during that final stretch. Will Dixon, who sparked the late run, led the Thunder with 29 points along with five rebounds and four assists. Michael Wilks paced the Knights with 18 points. Trine went to 14-5 on the season and got back to .500 in conference play at 4-4. Reed City’s Chad Holmavist scored 23.
