SOCCER Big Rapids 8, Reed City 0 BIG RAPIDS \u2013 Heavy rain Wednesday morning (Sept. 21) created a rare opportunity for Big Rapids\u2019 boys soccer team. The Cardinals\u2019 home field was too wet to play on, so their game vs Reed City was moved to Top Taggart Field, the home of Ferris State University football. Big Rapids scored eight first-half goals for an 8-0 victory. Houghton Lake 5, Pine River 1 LEROY \u2014 Houghton Lake had a 2-0 lead at halftime, en route to a 5-1 win over Pine River on Sept. 21. Pine River goal was scored by Steven Hilkowski, assisted by Jake Johnson. Pine River had 12 shots on goal with six in each half. Brad Holmes was the Pine River keeper and stopped a penalty kick in the game. \u201cThe team played very well and like a team tonight,\u201d Pine River coach Jenny Hoaglund said. \u201cHoughton Lake scored its last couple of goals with just a couple minutes to go in the game.\u201d CROSS COUNTRY Reed City runners REED CITY \u2014 Reed City runners competed in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division race on Sept. 20 at Fremont. The Coyotes didn\u2019t have enough runners for a team score. For the boys, Brandon Wirth was 16th (19:49.6), Calvin Rohde was 23rd (20:40.2) and Noah Blythe was 50th (23.06.2). For the girls, Joelyn Gamble-Brown was 27th (26:14.2), Mackenzie Vandawater was 37th (27:36.6) Leigha Johnson 52nd (31:01.7) and Hailey Duchene 62nd (35:52.9).
