GIRLS BASKETBALL

Grant 42, Reed City 32

GRANT  — Emily Libey led Reed City with 13 points, while Megan Donley scored nine points in this Central State Activities Association Gold Division loss to Grant on Jan. 12. Reed City plays at Chippewa Hills on Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Beal City 57, Evart 46

EVART — Evart (3-4, 0-3) dropped its fourth straight game on Thursday to Beal City. Beal City enjoyed quarter leads of 12-11, 25-19 and 46-26. Robbie Tapling scored 12 points for Evart while Layne Nadig and Danny Griffin added 11 apiece. Evart is at Manton on Friday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Holmquist scores 16 points

HOLLAND — A lockdown defensive effort by No. 4 Hope paced the Flying Dutchmen to a 74-51 victory over Trine in MIAA-action Saturday night in DeVos Arena. 

Hope’s defense forced the Thunder into a season-high 28 turnovers, which the Dutch turned into 30 points. Hope held Trine without a field goal for a span of 12:58 as it turned a two-point lead into a 20-point advantage. Jared Holmquist, of Reed City, paced the Thunder with 16 points. Ben Gardner led four Dutchmen in double-figures with 16 points. The loss drops Trine to 12-3 overall, 2-2 in the MIAA. Hope improved to 13-2 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

WRESTLING

Reed City places 13th

REED CITY — Reed City’s wrestling team was 13th out of 19 squads on Saturday in the Sparta Invitational. Isiah Yonkin was fourth at 215 pounds, Dylan Chrispell fifth (189) and Ryan Smmons sixth (103).

The Coyotes competed on Jan. 13 at Tri County in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action. Reed City lost to Tri County 63-12 and defeated Newaygo 54-16. Simmons and Yonkin were both 2-0. Coyotes who were 1-1 were Kyle Lawrence (112), Jimmy Bywalter (119), Alex Brummel (140), Taylor Cutler (145), Mason Bush (152), Derrick Rasor (160) and Chrispell (189).

Reed City will be at Big Rapids on Wednesday against the host school and Chippewa Hills. The Coyotes are at the Manistee Invitational on Saturday.

Pine River goes 4-1 at FHE

LEROY — Pine River’s wrestling team was 4-1 on Saturday at the Forest Hills Eastern Invitational. The Bucks defeated Coopersville 66-11, Otsego 57-12, Forest Hills Central 34-28 and Sturgis 40-36, and lost to Clinton 45-24.

Pine River wrestlers who were 5-0 were Andrew Park (119), Jacob Roberts (125) and Josh Jackson (189). Picking up 4-1 marks were Raden Holmes (171), Tyler Signor (112) and Tucker Fansler (130).

The Bucks wrestled last Wednesday and defeated Manton 51-22 and Forest Area 60-6.  Double winners for the Bucks were Dillon Stevens (103), Roberts (119), Andrew Park (125), Nathan Park (130), Fansler (135), Rigling (160), Holmes (171) Jackson (189), Brian McCurry (215)  and Andrew Frisbie (285).

Pine River coach Tim Jones said Chris Rehkopf (152) and Roger Barnett (140) also have been doing a strong job for the Bucks.

Pine River is at Manistee on Saturday.

COMPETITIVE CHEER

Evart girls are fifth

FARWELL — Evart’s competitive cheer team was fifth at the Farwell Invitational on Saturday.

“It wasn’t our strongest performance by any means,” Evart coach Marty Pattee said. “But we raised our Round 3 score. There will be adjustments. We have to prepare for next week.”

Evart is at Marion on Wednesday and at Harrison on Saturday.

Round 3 involves stunts and mounts.
