GIRLS BASKETBALL

Practices start

Coaches at Reed City (Brian Koopman), Evart (Paul Higgins) and Shane Ruppert (Pine River) started girls basketball practices this week to get ready for a season that starts later this month.

Reed City is at Pine River on Dec. 1 in the opener for both teams, Evart opens at Farwell on Nov. 30. Coaches for all three schools indicated they will have various scrimmages prior to their season openers.

Boys basketball practices start on Nov. 16.

CROSS COUNTRY

Logan Hammer, Madison Hammer

Saturday was an eventful occasion for cross country runners Logan Hammer, and his sister Madison.

Logan, a former runner at Evart, is a junior at Ferris State and placed 25th in the NCAA Division II regionals at Evansville, Ind., Saturday, clocking 31:43.29. Ferris was 11th with 272 points.

His sister Madison, is a freshman runner at Big Rapids and placed 28th (19:05.8) over the 3.1K course at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday for Division 2 all-state honors.

DEER HUNTING

All successful firearm hunters are reminded to bring their bucks to The Pioneer offices at 115 N. Michigan, Big Rapids, for photos and entry in the Big Buck Classic. Hours are 8 a.m to 5 p.m. during the season except holidays. For opening day on Nov. 15, special hours are 3-5 p.m.
