CROSS COUNTRY

Reed City third

REED CITY — Reed City’s cross country team was third on Saturday at the McBain Co-ed Cross Country Invitational.

For the Coyotes girls, Joelyn Gamble-Brown was seventh (24:54), Catherine Kettner was eighth (25:19) McKenzie Cornelius 14th (27:08), Lindsey Kienitz 15th (27:58), Hana Ondrus 19th (28:54), Haley Duchene 21st (29:41) and Devin Willard 26th (30:25).

For the boys, Brandon Wirth was seventh (19:48) and Brett Walker 22nd (22:19).

Reed City runs at Evart on Saturday.

Pine River third

LEROY — The Pine River Bucks took second place at the McBain Co-ed Cross Country invitational on Saturday.

The girls team point total of 38, added to the boys’ 60, provided combined a team score of 98. McBain won the meet with 55, while Reed City came in third (182), followed by Houghton Lake (185) and Mesick (240). The Bucks had 13 runners take home medals. Rachel DePew ran a seasonal best time of 25:35 and Aithin Jackson hit a personal best of 24:34.

The Bucks run at Evart on Friday.

BOYS SOCCER

Northern Michigan Christian 8, Pine River 0

LEROY — Pine River fell to 0-8 with this loss on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Doug Conner made 17 saves and allowed five goals, while Caleb Bouman had six saves and allowed three goals

Conner Hoaglund recorded eight blocks and interceptions while Dana Hill Jake Johnson, Zachary Underhill and Kelly Witherspoon had three blocks and interceptions apiece.

Owen Gray and Brady Loop had two blocks and interceptions each.

Johnson, Steve Hilkowski, Underhill and Anna Lindquist all had one shot on goal each.

VOLLEYBALL

McBain 3, Pine River 1

LEROY — Pine River opened the Highland Conference with a loss to McBain 25-12, 23-25,25-20,25-11 on Sept. 22.

For the Bucks, Julie Justin had 12 digs and five kills, Kyla Johnson contributed 11 digs and Chelsey TerBurgh added 10 and Kierra Justin added six kills.

“Our serving really let us down tonight,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. “We only served 70 percent for the night. You definitely can’t win games with a night like that. I thought we played well in game 2.

“We executed our plan and that was effective. We just couldn’t execute it all night. We will take this as a learning experience and use it for the next time we meet them.”

Pine River at Cadillac

LEROY — Pine River lost four matches on Saturday at the Cadillac Invitational.

In pool play, the Bucks lost to Leland 25-17, 25-23; to Harbor Springs 25-20, 26-24 and to Ludington 25-17, 25-20. They lost to Hopkins in the playoffs 25-19, 25-12.

For the Bucks, Kyle Johnson had eight kills and 30 digs, Julie Justin had eight kills and 27 digs; and Logan Powell had 37 assists and 15 digs.

“We are continuing to work things out right now,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. “Our setters-hitter chemistry shows improvement most days but then struggles other days. Our serving was a struggle again today even though much better than Tuesday. Our main focus is finishing games. We get leads but just can’t sustain them right now. That is definitely a focus going into this week.”
