REED CITY — Drake Walker is in his senior and final season as a Reed City athlete and would obviously like to end his sports career on a fabulous note.

Walker, also a Reed City cross country runner and wrestler, has been in track since the seventh grade. His 4x8 team had a strong season as a junior.

This spring, Walker will be in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 4x8 relay.

His time in the 800 has been a 2:08 and in the 1,600 a 5:02.

“It’d be nice to get in the 4:40 for the mile and for the 800, it’d be nice to get a 2:04,” Walker said. “I’m practicing hard. I want to stay strong. I have a tendency to die a little bit.”

Despite the weather, Walker has been able to run outside and considers himself to be in good physical condition as he gets ready for the track season.

“My breathing is really good from wrestling,” he said. “I have good strong (lungs) from that.”

The distances will be well-rounded this season, Walker predicted, adding that “good running weather” should mean good results from Coyote track athletes.

The 1,600 will be Walker’s best event. Kris Kellogg is another distance runner.

Spring break ends April 14 and the Coyotes are scheduled for meets at Big Rapids April 16, at Chippewa Hills April 23, at Newaygo April 25 and at Central Montcalm April 30 for their first month of outdoor action.

No home meets are set for this season due to the current track condition.
