Roberts reflects on memorable match at state final

LEROY — It was quite a wrestling season for Pine River’s Jacob Roberts.

Roberts had a key victory for the Bucks on Feb. 26 when they defeated Decatur 35-34 in the Division 4 state quarterfinal round.

It was the first win for a Pine River team at the state tournament.

Roberts picked up a key pin late in that match, thanks to a quick reversal. It was his biggest match of the season.

He qualified for the state individual tournament and lost his first match narrowly 4-3. He dropped his second match 11-3 to complete his season.

“I was a little sloppy in the beginning,” he said. “I tried to pick it up. In the end, I did what my teammates needed me to do. I think he let his guard down, I really do. He thought he could beat me. I had to do it. You have to be confident in anything, confident in your team and confident in yourself.”

Roberts was a sophomore for the Bucks, who earned district, regional and conference titles.

“The only people I lost to were ranked kids,” he said. “I’m doing pretty good as a 119-pounder.”

Roberts said he had “tremendous” improvement from last season. He worked with the Park brothers, Andrew and Nathan.

“Those guys really helped me,” he said. “I’m best on top.”
