REED CITY — Sidni Rushford could hardly have picked a better time for her first grand slam home run of the season.

Rushford got the slam in the first game of a doubleheader against Kent City on Thursday in Reed City’s home finale, a 13-5 win.

Reed City lost the second game 14-3 in six innings.

Rushford was the winning pitcher in the first game with four strikeouts in six innings. Kamryn Myers. Devin Willard and Kiera Barker had two hits apiece. Jordyn Storch, Sidni Rushford. Lilly Andres. Cassie Enos and Alyssa Olds had one hit apiece.

It was her first over-the-fence homer this year.

“I’m pretty sure it was an inside pitch,” Rushford said. “I had two strikes on me and coach said to get a contact swing. I just hit it. As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone.”

In the second game, Kent City led 10-0 going into the bottom of the fifth but a basesloaded error with two outs brought two Coyotes in and extended the game for another inning.

Maddie Morgan, Storch and Rushford pitched for Reed City. Andres had two hits while Myers, Olds and Enos had one apiece.

“Kent City had won 14 of its last 15 games and we felt this is the type of team we’d want to play going into districts,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “They didn’t let us down. In the second game, they played extremely well and we didn’t play well. Both games should have been close but they weren’t.”
