Reed City youngsters work on basketball skills

REED CITY — Reed City boys basketball varsity players of the future have been working on their skills the past two weeks.

Varsity coach Dean McGuire noted two sessions have been taking place with the third- through-fifth-graders at the middle school and sixth- through eighth-graders in the high school.

“Overall there are 48 participants,” McGuire said.

The sessions have been going Monday through Thursday of this week and last.

“This is the second year we’ve done it,” McGuire said. “Last year we had 51. This year we’re at 48. We’re pretty consistent.”

Basic skills, including shooting, ballhandling and passing, have been the main emphasis, McGuire noted. “We will scrimmage a little bit this week.”

The Coyotes varsity team will be at Ferris the upcoming weekend at Wink Arena for Saturday and Sunday scrimmages. Meanwhile, practices take place after the youth sessions this week.

McGuire will be entering his third season as coach.
