Reed City wrestling team boasts 27 athletes
REED CITY — Reed City coach Roger Steig has 27 wrestlers on his roster for a team that is now in its second week of practices.
Senior Matt McGahey is among the wrestlers back for this season and he’ll be at 125. Thayne Stieg, a senior will be at 140. Another senior, Devin Ward, is at 171, Evan Skiver, a senior, is at 215. Troy Giese is a senior at 160 and Derrick Rasor is at 152 as a sophomore.
McGahey, Stieg and Skiver were all regional qualifiers last year. Adam Kehr, an all-state wrestler, graduated from last year’s team and is now at Lake Erie University.
The season begins Dec. 10 at Hart. There’s a preseason scrimmage set for Dec. 6 at Lakewood. The Coyotes are also at the Pine River wrestling quad Dec. 17. The first home match is the Reed City wrestling Team Invitational Jan. 3.
Reed City was 20-10 for a dual record last season.
“This year’s team I expect to improve on that,” Steig said. “We have a good mixture this year of big brother and little brother. If we can bring our little brothers along, they’ll decide the fate of the team this year.”
Reed City is in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division that includes Big Rapids, Chippewa Hills, Central Montcalm, Grant, Newaygo and Tri County.
“The conference is always tough,” Steig said. “I think Chip Hills is ranked seventh in the state. I think it could be a good battle between Chippewa Hills, Tri County and ourselves. But you can’t count anyone out.”
Lakeview and Hesperia will be tough teams in the Silver Division, which will be wrestling the Gold Division in the final end-of-the-season tournament.
