REED CITY — It might be the dead of summer but Reed City wrestlers are keeping their practice room at the school busy twice a week.

Coyote coach Roger Steig and his son Ryan, also the Reed City middle school coach, are working with wrestlers each week including some that are participating in tournaments during the summer.

Tournaments are scheduled on weekends.

Last weekend. Adam Kehr and Matt Magahey competed in tourney action at Climax Scotts and Kehr took first place. Magahey took second.

Kehr also took third at a Sparta tournament earlier in the summer.

The Tuesday-Thursday practices will continue all summer long. But this is the MHSAA mandated dead period so there are no practices this week.

Ryan Steig was working with wrestlers last week and said the turnouts vary each time but the attitude and dedication by the youngsters have been impressive

“We usually get 13 to 16 (at a practice),” Roger Steig said. “This is the first time we’ve gone this often. We seem to be getting a lot of interest. A lot of the older kids are participating. That’s nice.”
