Reed City wrestlers open with home matches
REED CITY — Reed City’s wrestling squad is wasting no time in testing its talents.
The Coyotes are home Wednesday to wrestle Ludington and Roscommon in the first wrestling matches of the season.
“Both those squads are pretty good squads,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “Roscommon quite often is in quarterfinals. They’re always strong.”
Reed City goes to South Haven for a team tournament on Saturday.
“That’s our overnighter, that’s our big weekend,” Steig said. “We stay two nights down there. We have a competitive team this year.”
Meanwhile, Steig noted that the Coyote middle school program continues to increase its numbers.
“We’ve had middle school right along,” he said. “What made a big difference is my assistant is in the middle school.”
The numbers went this year from eight to 25. The middle school consists of seventh and eighth graders.
“For a lot of them, it’s a starter program.” Steig said. “Some of them have wrestled before. “
The middle school wrestles every Saturday. The final match is this Saturday.
Improved numbers continues to help Steig’s varsity program He’s figuring filling all 14 spots all season
“We have to recruit pretty hard,” he said. “This year, we had a pretty good turnout.”
