REED CITY  — Reed City’s wrestling team went 4-1 in its home tournament on Saturday.

The Coyotes lost 65-12 to Byron Center but then posted victories of 84-0 over the Reed City B wrestlers 54-17 over Scottville Mason County Central and 44-26 over the Byron Center B team.

Going 5-0 for the Coyotes were Dakota Gogolowski at 189 pounds and Matthew MacDonald at 285. Wrestlers that were 4-1 were Matt McGahey at 103, Devin Ward at 125, Paris Jones at 145 and Aaron French at 215. Thayne Stieg at 112, Adam Kehr at 140 and Travis French at 171 were 3-1.

“I thought we wrestled well,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “Wednesday night, we’ve got Lakeview and Central Montcalm (at Lakeview), two teams we lost to last year. I feel our team is prepared for it.”

MacDonald is in his senior season and in his third varsity winter. He didn’t wrestle last season.

“I did jazz band,” he said, adding that this winter, MacDonald decided to focus on wrestling. He has played soccer and has been in track in the past.”

His record on the mat right now is 13-2.

“I feel pretty confident,” he said. “I went down to the South Haven match. I thought the kids from down south would be really good. But I came out 4-1.”

It’s McDonald’s best high school season so far. He’s hoping to qualify for the state finals.

Aaron French is a senior at 215. Like MacDonald, he also took last season off, but missed the sport and wanted to return.

“I’ve been working hard,” he said. “I’m pretty good at everything (on the mat).”

French is also hoping to improve on his takedowns. A main team goal, he added was for the team to do extremely well in Central State Activities Association matches.

The Coyotes wrestle Wednesday at Lakeview.
