Reed City wrestlers eye winning season

REED CITY — The wrestling season starts on Wednesday for Reed City, and veteran coach Roger Steig is impressed with the talent he’ll be putting on the mat this season.

The Coyotes will be at Beaverton on Wednesday and at the Kent City Invitational on Saturday. They host a Central State Activities Association Gold Division meet on Dec. 14 against Big Rapids.

Practices started on Nov. 14. The Coyotes were at Lake Odessa Lakewood for a scrimmage last Saturday.

There are around 22 wrestlers on the team. Senior Alex Brummel (140) was a state qualifier last season. Other promising wrestlers include sophomore Mason Bush (152), junior Jayson Johnson (140), senior Tyler Kerr (171), senior Derrick Rasor (160), sophomore Ryan Simmons (112) and junior Brett Walker (189).

“We’re a little bigger team than we had last year,” Steig said. “We have all the weights filled.”

Other home meets are  Jan. 28 for the Reed City Individual Invitational and Feb. 1 for a home match with Big Rapids and Pine River.

“We’re stronger than we were last year,” Steig said. “But some of them will be younger. That’s a key combination for us. We have a larger group of freshmen. A lot of them will be seeing varsity action this year.”

But there are some freshmen wrestling for the first time ever.

“We’re starting from ground one,” Steig said, while adding he’s looking for them to progress faster than might be

expected.
