Reed City wrestlers edge Big Rapids
BIG RAPIDS -- Big Rapids and Reed City hadn't won a match going into their showdown in the BR Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
But it went down to the wire with Reed City taking a 39-36 win.
Hastings beat East Kentwood for the title. TC West was in third, followed by Lakeview, Montabella, Evart, Hopkins Grand Rapids West Catholic, Reed City and Big Rapids.
"It was a tough tournament," Reed City coach Roger Steig said. "It was our first time back here in awhile. We're excited about being back here. We finished up the day with a great match against our rivals. We had a couple kids come through at the end. Ryan Neal had a huge win for us at heavyweight by one point. Mason Johnson had a pin at 125."
Reed City trailed by three points, prior to Johnson's match, the last one of the day. His six-point pin made it a three-point Coyote win.
Austin Fowler was 5-0 for the Coyotes.
"I was going for points," Johnson said. "The team is looking strong. We have some new kids and we're setting things up for a good year."
Big Rapids coach Bruce Hoffman pointed out his squad is a young team.
"Some of our kids got their first win of the season," Hoffman said, referring to Jonathan Snavley (215) and Archie Rush (160).
"For a couple of kids, it's the first time we've ever wrestled."
Mike Mills was undefeated at 189 pounds for Big Rapids. Matt Henderson (130), Brett Root (112) and Brody Sleeper (119) were 4-1. Evart was also at the tournament.
The Wildcats went 2-3 on the day with wins against Big Rapids (42-30) and Grand Rapids West Catholic (51-27). We lost to East Kentwood, Lakeview and Montabella. Dom Malicki and Reese Ransom went 4-1 on the day. Cole Hopkins went 3-1, Kinkade DuBreuil and Nick Robinson went 3-2.
"We are looking forward to next week when we can get our roster back, close, to full strength," Evart coach Benjamin Bryant said.
