Reed City wrestlers beat Tri County, fall to Pine River

REED CITY — Reed City’s wrestling team beat Tri County 44-36 and lost to Pine River 55-24 in non-league double dual action Tuesday night.

In the victory over Tri County, Coyotes that won their matches by pins were Dakota Gogolowski at 189, Matt McDonald at heavyweight, Thayne Stieg at 112, Mike Schneidt at 135, Paris Jones at 145 and Travis French at 171.

Also winning their matches were Devin Ward at 125 and Adam Kehr at 140.

“We had a good match with Tri County,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “We match up well with them and won a close one.”

Against Pine River, winners for the Coyotes, all by pin, were McDonald at 285, Matt McGahey at 103, Gogolowski at 189 and Aaron French at 215.

“Pine River has a very strong team,” Steig said. “They’re solid from top to bottom. We wrestle well, but they’re a very good team. It tells us where we have to get from here to the end of the year. I think it was a good match for us.”

Pine River defeated Tri County 60-15.

“The seniors were a big help in getting the team going,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “Reed City was a pretty good team. We just had some matches go our way.

Maverick Martin had a 7-5 win for Pine River at 140 pounds against Reed City, Jones noted, that proved to be critical.

Reed City, 9-5 has a six-team tournament on Jan. 7 at home.

Practices were to resume all of this week.

The Coyotes are led by Gogolowski with a 12-2 record and Kehr with an 11-3 mark. Aaron French is 10-2 at 215. Matt McGahey, a freshman, is 11-3 at 103. Matt McDonald, a senior, is 7-1 at heavyweight.

Reed City is preparing to wrestle at Morley Stanwood on Jan. 4 against Holton and Hesperia.

“Hesperia won the league last year,” Steig noted. “They’re ranked in the top five in the state again.”

Pine River has a JV tourney at Traverse City West this Friday.

Kyle Nixon at 125, Abel Langworthy at 130 and Larry Kissinger at 145 lead the team with eight wins.
