REED CITY — The Reed City wrestling team finished 1-1 in its quad meet, defeating Big Rapids 39-24 and losing to Tri-County 65-12 Wednesday at Reed City High School. Coyote wrestlers earning single victories Wednesday include Abby Helsel (130), Jayson Johnson (145), Brett Walker (189), Austin Fowler (215), Ryan Neal (285), Ryan Simmons (112), Mark White (125), Hunter Brahaman (135) and Mason Bush (152).Fowler, Brahaman, Johnson and Bush all won via pins.

“Two very young teams going at it,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “It was a tough match all the way through. In the end, some of our more seasoned kids prevailed. It was a nice match for us to start.” DJ Gates (160), Brandon Hatchew  (112) and Aron Rappy (135) won matches for Big Rapids against Reed City, with Hatchew and Rappy earning pins.

“We’re improving as a team,” Big Rapids wrestling coach Dan Underhill said after his team’s match against Reed City. “We have a long way to go to be a good team, but we are showing improvements week by week. We started the season with 28 wrestlers, and ts been so intense with our program that we’re down to 13.”

Reed City was 2-3 on Saturday and placed fifth at the South Haven Invitational,

Reed City lost to Coloma 54-24 and Bloomingdale 42-41, defeated Watervliet 57-18 and South Haven 72-6. Reed City then lost to Bangor 53-30.

Five Coyotes went 4-1: Ryan Simmons (112), Heaven Hurley (130), Jayson Johnson (140), Mason Bush (152) and Tyler Kerr (171). Brett Walker was 3-2 at 189. Mark White 1-0 at 125 and Cassie Enos 1-0 at 171. Brendon Ruppert was 2-2 at 125.

Other wrestlers scoring wins were Abby Helsel, Austin Major, Hunter Brahman, Kellen Haney and Ryan Neal.

Ryan Simmons is a sophomore off to a great start and improved his season record to 12-2.

Reed City is at Lakeview on Jan. 4 with Lakeview and Newaygo.
